A Match Made in Heaven: Online Social Networking and Mobile Marketing

2009 was the year of the Rat. 2010 that of the Ox. And it would seem that 2011 is going to be the year of the Mobile. While many a Chinese Zodiac follower will be praising the new year as that of the Tiger, the explosive growth in online social interaction combined with rapid developments in the communications industry may indicate a very different way to mark 2011.

Millions of mobile users throughout the world have become reliant on their smart phones, and as more developments continue to occur at a blistering rate, we are seeing these devices used for a whole myriad of functions. Today's technology hungry market is already utilising online services for many daily tasks, from day-to-day errands, making payments and purchases to interacting with friends, finding news and sourcing information. As the market's needs continue to advance, a much higher importance will be placed using mobile marketing to provide your target audience the user experience that they crave. But this marketing strategy really becomes a force to be reckoned with when teamed up with social networking. The combination of mobile access with social interactivity has created a value adding experience that has hit a particular sweet spot on the palette of the today's technology-saavy consumer. With 65 Million users currently using their mobile devices to access Facebook, there is a serious indication that mobile social networking is definitely a service that consumers crave. And there's more; Facebook's mobile social networkers are 50% more active than their computer-bound counterparts, while on Twitter a full 25% of members access the site from mobile devices. So what does the future hold for social networking via mobile platforms?

A study released by eMarketer stated that within two years 43% of global mobile internet users (607.5 Million people) will be logging onto their social networks from their mobile phones. Mobile and social marketing are continuing to converge towards a completely unified service, and the evolution of one helps to drive the adoption of the other. With this in mind, it is integral to fuse a strong social media strategy with your mobile marketing campaign, as this will allow for maximum brand identity exposure and awareness. Even though mobile marketing is still in it's infancy, in the not too distant future it will be an essential part of any successful businesses' digital marketing strategy. The difference is, those who incorporate social networking-led mobile marketing into their strategies now, will reap the benefits while their competitors are still scratching their heads at the whole 'mobile thingy.'
