Mobilising Your Organisation's Social Media StrategyPrior to the development of the smart phone, online communication strategies were limited by the fact that their target audience were essentially immobile once connected to the internet i.e. they couldn't move away from their computer screens! Even laptops, which were ground breaking at the time of their release due to their transportable nature, were limited to wireless connections and internet hotspots.The development of the smart phone, allowing for constant and reliable internet access while eliminating the hampering effects of carrying around a laptop, has allowed for the next evolution of online marketing tools to take place. The flood of applications and services that are now available for smart phone users is a testament to the popularity and acceptance of this form of interactivity from the majority of the global internet-using population. An array of 'apps' have increased the personalisation of the online user experience immeasurably, and combined with emails, social networking and many other online services, the smart phone has completely renovated the methods and frequency to which we utilise the internet. Yes, these services and applications existed to some extent before the development of the smart phone, but it was the integration of all these various services, combined with a significant increase in transportability, that facilitated the development of a population that is increasingly integrating various aspects of their lives with online functions. But even though many businesses are very much aware of the huge increase in the percentage of customers that are spending an ever increasing amount of time online, many fail to take advantage of this beyond putting up a badly managed Facebook page.
